This title was released in 2025. This is my fourth shipped title and I was a Narrative Designer, with additional programming responsibilities.
My responsibilities and roles in this project:
-
Character writing
-
Dialogue implementation and coding
-
UI adjustments/pop ups
We were a group of only two this time, with me doing all the writing and the majority of the code. I wrote all three characters entire dialogue and endings, which I also implemented. This was my first time using Ren'Py, which is an open source engine made specifically for visual novels, and it comes with many in-built features. We had no communication issues and would have regular weekly meetups to work on the project, QAing each other's work as we went. We would also have weekly feedback sessions, where we would invite people to play the current build and complete a survey of their experience. We would then take that feedback and implement changes accordingly. We used Jira and Confluence for task tracking and documentation, using a Kanban style. We also used GitHub as our form of source control.
Our only real issues were the types of feedback we would receive, for a while our testers were not people who enjoyed visual novels, so their feedback would sometimes be irrelevant to the genre or simply just a complaint about something that visual novels are known for. (Such as a lack of gameplay aside from dialogue choices).
We went about solving this by having very directing questions on our survey and going out of our way to try and bring in people who play visual novels as testers, so that we could get the kind of feedback we were fishing for.
